Biography
While Abstract Expressionist painter Jennifer Rae Ochs continues to reveal a stunning and intimate connection of raw emotion that drenches each original canvas, the career of this rising star is showing significant momentum. Her work is garnering an ever-increasing and well-deserved spotlight from both American and International fans and a growing number of collectors.
Director Martha Higgins is mounting a solo exhibit of Ochs’ exciting work titled “Celebrated Moments” at her prestigious Gallery Row venue, M. J. Higgins Fine Art & Furnishings beginning with an exclusive party event on Saturday, September 15th, 2007 (6-9pm). Och’s most recent creations and select earlier pieces will be featured in this month-long exhibition. The Gallery is located at 244 S. Main Street in downtown Los Angeles (between 2nd and 3rd Streets). For information about the gallery and showing, visit http://www.mjhiggins.com/ or call (213) 617-1700.
Ochs proudly accepted an invitation to exhibit in the “Today & Tomorrow Artshow” at the prestigious Sejong Center in Seoul, Korea in 2005. She previously exhibited twice at BGH Gallery at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, including her first solo show aptly titled “I.Forward.” She has also recently exhibited at the Chase Mitchell Gallery in Orange County and the Black Cat Gallery in Culver City. After showing her first light-installation piece, “u-vism,” (merging a pop-art approach and abstract technique) at the Hollywood Pop art gallery La-La Land, Ochs was asked to exhibit in a public art exhibit, “Autumn Lights,” at the Caltrans Plaza, and again at the DETOUR Music Festival in downtown LA that featured superstar singer Beck and Basement Jaxx in Fall of 2006. Whether they entice or excite, Ochs’ paintings reveal a daring talent and extend to the viewer an undeniable invitation to experience an unleashing of their spirit.
Observing a personal principle of authenticity as her artistic constant, Ochs has always thrown open the floodgates to the boundless possibilities of expression that her work in Abstract allows. The variety and power of her work seems to transcend craft or technique—each piece connects to our heart and soul, to the core of our being, suspending us in a kind of timeless, captivating resonance.
A black and white truth in the art world is that the proof of an artist’s popularity is reflected in sales—demonstrating not only that collectors like her work but also that they want to live with her expressions. For Ochs, that proof is coming true with a steady rise in commissions and purchases. Word is spreading with exponential results. Many of her collectors who started with a single piece have been consistently adding others, frequently commissioning works to accentuate their environment and their lives.
“It’s wonderful to have this momentum in my career,” says Ochs. “When I create, it’s purely a connection with energy, unity and the harmony of color. Sales are a separate and wonderful part of the greater picture for me, but, of course, it’s very affirming. Definitely. It gives me an even greater sense of freedom and peace to approach that creative environment… to make the time and the space to dive into the process.”
From the very first time that Ochs approached a canvas, she has intuitively connected with paint and palette as a means to mainline passionate and vibrant feeling into h er work. Following training in classical piano, Ochs honed her craft in art through a continuing association with an eclectic cadre of fellow artists, encompassing a variety of styles and creative media. Hailing from a closely-knit family in Minnesota, Ochs possesses a strong sense of origin balanced with an instinctive hunger to experience the spectrum of life. With a well-stamped passport, she has always approached travel just as she approaches painting; venturing forth courageously with an open mind and spirit, always seizing each opportunity to immerse herself in new experiences and to live them to the fullest… always returning to the canvas inspired to express the music of her soul.
