Brief History of Sunglasses

Sunglasses have transformed from simple eye protection to cultural icons, shaping style across decades. Originally developed in the 12th century by the Chinese, the first sunglasses were designed to shield eyes from bright sunlight and were crafted with smoky quartz lenses. In the 18th century, James Ayscough experimented with tinted lenses, yet it wasn’t until the 1920s that sunglasses became truly mainstream.

In the 1930s, sunglasses were popularized by Hollywood. Stars like Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich wore dark shades, associating them with mystery and glamour. This era also saw the introduction of Ray-Ban’s aviators, initially developed for military pilots and quickly adopted as a fashion staple. The 1950s saw the rise of cat-eye frames, adding a touch of feminine allure, while the 1960s embraced large, bold frames made iconic by figures like Jackie Kennedy.

The 1970s pushed boundaries with oversized, tinted lenses, perfectly complementing the era’s experimental fashion. The 1980s took sunglasses to new levels with thick, statement frames, as seen with Wayfarers, popularized by movies like The Blues Brothers. Sunglasses became synonymous with rebellion and individuality.

Fast forward to the 2000s, where wraparound styles and sporty designs made a comeback, followed by a resurgence of retro styles in the 2010s. Today, sunglasses blend function with high fashion, available in diverse shapes, colors, and materials.

In 2024, JRO ART is excited to launch its first-ever line of sunglasses. Designed by artist Jennifer Rae Ochs, each pair is a fusion of art and durability, embodying bold, sleek lines with shatterproof lenses and 100% UVA/UVB protection. These high-quality, fade-resistant shades continue the tradition of merging form and function, perfect for those who value style with an artistic edge. With JRO ART, sunglasses aren’t just an accessory—they’re wearable art.
